Indication: Hypertension, chronic stable angina. Presentation: Norvasc® (Amlodipine Besylate) 5 mg and 10 mg tablet. Available in blister packs of 30’s and 100’s. Dosage: For both hypertension and angina, the usual initial dose is 5 mg amlodipine once daily, which may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg depending on the individual patient’s response. For hypertension in patients aged between 6 and 17 years, the starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily, up-titrated to 5 mg once daily if the blood pressure goal is not achieved in 4 weeks. No dose adjustment of amlodipine is required upon concomitant administration of thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Contraindications: Amlodipine is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to dihydropyridines (amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker) or any of the inert ingredients. Adverse reactions: Amlodipine is well-tolerated. The most commonly observed side effects are headaches, dizziness, somnolence, palpitations, flushing, abdominal pain, nausea, oedema and fatigue. Special precautions: Patients with NYHA Ill and IV heart failure of non-ischaemic aetiology and patients with impaired hepatic function.
